What is ATS?

ATS stands for Applicant Tracking System and is used by companies to streamline their recruitment process. It is HR software designed to collect applications, scan resumes, rank applicants, and filter out those who either score low or are considered not a good fit for the position.

The score is calculated based on the formatting of the resume — whether it’s easily readable — and whether the content includes the right keywords and skills required for the role. Even though every company uses different metrics and ATS systems, the basics they look for are often the same.

That’s why using Kickresume’s ATS Checker is a great way to double-check if your resume has a high enough score to pass the ATS.

Do all companies use ATS?

No. Not all companies use ATS, but nearly all large and mid-size companies do. It helps them to manage high volumes of applications and filter out applicants.

Unless you know for certain the company you're applying to doesn't use one, it's safest to assume your resume will be scanned before it's read.

What kind of resumes get rejected by ATS?

Two kinds.

The first are resumes that are simply hard to read, because they use bold graphic elements, photos, or two-column layouts.

The second are resumes that get read fine but look irrelevant, because they don't contain the right keywords or don't state the necessary skills the role calls for.

In both cases, the resume gets filtered out before a human sees it.

What is an ATS score and how is it calculated?

It's a number telling you how well your resume is optimized for Applicant Tracking Systems, calculated from more than 20 checks. Some are technical, whether your formatting is readable, and how much of your resume an ATS can process. Others check whether you've included the right keywords and skills for the role.

What is a good ATS score?

Anything from 75% up is generally considered good. At that level, your resume is well-formatted, readable for both humans and software, and includes the right keywords — which makes your chances of passing the ATS check considerably higher.

That said, there's no reason to settle. A higher score means fewer things standing between your resume and a recruiter.

How to get a 100% ATS score?

There are three main things you should focus on when creating an ATS-friendly resume: design, structure, and content.

Design. Pick an ATS-friendly template, use a standard font, and drop photos, background patterns, graphic skill bars, and two-column layouts.
Structure. Include all standard resume sections, complete your profile details, and add start and end dates to every entry.
Content. Work in the right keywords and skills from the job ad, and replace repetitive verbs with stronger ones.
